What is an LEI?
An LEI code, or LEI number, is an international business number that identifies a legal entity, and contains information about who owns it. LEI is the abbreviation of "Legal Entity Identifier". Requirements for an LEI apply uniformly to all legal entities such as companies, associations, foundations, etc. regardless of whether they are privately or publicly owned. LEI numbers are mandatory in the EU at the request of the G20 countries under MiFID. The goal of the GLEIF is to create a global LEI system that can uniquely identify any legal entity, while ensuring greater transparency and stability in global financial markets.
Who should get an LEI?
It is mandatory for companies, associations and funds to have an LEI when they want to trade in financial instruments such as securities, bonds, ETFs, futures, swaps, and interest rate swaps. You are welcome to contact us if you have any further questions. Legislation came into force on January 3, 2018. If you want to learn more, you can visit GLEIF here and/or contact us.
